“Morceaux de choix”, a painting by Nicolas Monjo, rendered in oil and acrylic on canvas, is a work that condenses a world of symbolic intensity into a compact, visually rich composition. In this small format (41 x 33 cm), Monjo delivers a signature piece: blending social satire, twisted childhood imagery, and existential reflection.
At first glance, the viewer is struck by the visual density of the painting. Faces overlap, arms entwine, hands block or frame gazes. The vivid red background encloses a chaotic and fascinating human patchwork, where body parts meld and collide. Eyes wide open seem to question or confront us directly. There’s a sense of urgency and contained violence, as if something is about to burst.
Each detail tells its own story: a woman holds a fish like a silent trophy; a huge, gaping mouth with a bright red heart-like tongue evokes either a scream or an insatiable hunger. To the left, a blue figure with 3D glasses symbolizes our distorted perception of reality. Lower down, a yellow rubber duck and a cartoonish white dog with sharp teeth add a touch of absurdity that perfectly fits into Monjo’s surreal narrative.
The "Niko M" tattooed inside a black heart on an arm subtly references the artist’s name, cleverly embedded into the image as a wink to the commodification of identity. The yellow crown at the top right evokes power or empty glory, echoing the language of Basquiat—but reinterpreted here through a more physical, raw vocabulary.
Nicolas Monjo, with his rough and textured palette, plays on contrasts of whites, grays, reds, and blues to generate constant visual tension. His paintwork seems to scrape at the surface of reality to reveal its hidden layers—its shadows, its absurdity. This painting does not leave the viewer unshaken. It challenges us to reflect on humanity, the body, identity, and the image.
Offered by the Galerie Bouillon d’art in Bordeaux, this painting is intended for collectors of contemporary art who seek powerful, symbolically dense works. Buying “Morceaux de choix” by Nicolas Monjo means owning a piece of a world that spills over—where poetry collides with social critique through a confident and masterful pictorial gesture.
