Pascale Brosseau is Breton. Perhaps you had guessed? Certainly, Bretons have this unique ability to speak about what is essential to them: the ocean. They live with water, become one with the elements, merge into the aquatic environment. Pascale Brosseau has inherited a strong character from this heritage, and with the Atlantic Ocean as her backdrop, she paints childhood memories on beaches lined with pine trees. Her swimmers rewrite history, sometimes embellishing it slightly to make it more beautiful than it truly was.

“Water is an element in which one forgets oneself, where one disappears. When you swim, you are no longer just yourself but become one with it. Time no longer exists. And when you come out, there remains that small mysterious smile — both disenchanted and satisfied — worn by my swimmers.”

If Pascale Brosseau has always swum, she has also painted since early childhood. First drawings, then canvases — yet it remained a pleasure pursued in stolen hours. She became a teacher, bookseller, journalist, press officer, worked in communications, played the ukulele in a band, wrote crime fiction columns… A rich literary and artistic life. Encouraging encounters eventually led her to participate in her first exhibitions. The artist describes this turning point as “like jumping from a diving board a little too high, only to discover with delight that everything goes just fine.” From that moment on, she devoted herself fully to painting, which had accompanied her all her life.

Her work revolves around mixed media and acrylic techniques — a blend of flat areas and textured relief, vivid colors and muted tones. Contrast is one of the keys to her expression, like an unexpected shift that catches the viewer off guard.

The Gallery’s Words About Pascale Brosseau

Pascale Brosseau contacted me by email during the lockdown period — a time conducive to reflection and the launching of new projects. I discovered her element, her universe, and that emerging sense of wonder in front of her works with great pleasure. I loved them, yet I did not respond immediately, as the period was not truly favorable for welcoming a new artist. A week later, Pascale Brosseau called me. I felt her joie de vivre, her rich and complex journey, and a genuine desire to build a relationship of trust. The decision was made instantly, and despite that time which kept us confined at home, we chose to begin this new collaboration without delay, while waiting for the moment we could finally meet in person.
