With Les Miresses 5, Anne Guerrin continues her cycle dedicated to the miresses—those ancient healers, seers, and wise women who carried intuitive knowledge, a deep inner vision, and generations of transmitted wisdom. In this stoneware sculpture, the artist captures an intensely human, almost mythical presence, blending dignity, gentleness, and spiritual depth.
The figure stands out through her open, direct, yet inward-looking gaze. The eyes, lightly veiled by the texture of the clay, do not confront the viewer; instead, they express a quiet listening, an attention to what moves beneath the surface of things. The finely modelled face radiates the contained benevolence of women who know, who watch, who guide.
The treatment of stoneware is remarkably rich: shades of grey, pale vertical drips reminiscent of rainfall, horizontal marks like footprints or the passage of time. Anne Guerrin uses the textures of earth as a language in itself. The sculpture appears molded not only by the artist’s hands but also by natural elements—wind, water, and weather. The metal pins, characteristic of Guerrin’s work, function as poetic sutures, suggesting vulnerability embraced, repair, and the continuity of a lived story.
The hairstyle, composed of two elevated, knotted volumes, gives the miresse a regal, almost ceremonial silhouette. It evokes ancient traditions without tying itself to any specific culture. Guerrin’s Miresses are universal—figures who speak to shared human memory.
Around the neck, several sculpted stoneware rings form a restrained yet powerful adornment. These rings evoke protection, transition, and the passing of knowledge. They reinforce the idea of the miresses as guardians, bearers of wisdom, women rooted in time.
The long, vertical bust—crossed by liquid traces and incised lines—takes on the appearance of a landscape. One can read rain-washed forests, pathways, or earth strata. This telluric dimension, so characteristic of Anne Guerrin, merges the human figure with nature itself. The miresse becomes territory, memory, and inner monument all at once.
With Les Miresses 5, Anne Guerrin presents a profoundly contemplative work. Both protective presence and silent witness, this stoneware sculpture integrates perfectly into a minimalist, contemporary, or meditative interior. It draws the eye, anchors the space, and offers collectors a unique, expressive work imbued with quiet strength.
This piece speaks to those seeking a symbolic sculpture—one that tells without explaining, listens without judging, and carries within it a wisdom that feels ancient and enduring.
