Cheval 1 – A Poetic Sculpture Between Balance and Imagination

In the singular universe of the sculptor Robert de Sutter, matter becomes language and line becomes breath. Cheval 1, a unique sculpture made of bronze and ceramic, embodies a subtle meeting point between animal strength and dreamlike delicacy. The work stands at the frontier between reality and imagination, like a fragile apparition emerging into space.

At first glance, the silhouette fascinates. The horse, stretched skyward on long, almost filament-like legs, seems suspended in an improbable lightness. The animal is not merely represented; it is interpreted, almost reinvented. The sculpture abandons traditional massive volumes in favor of an airy sculptural language, where every line appears to search for a perfect balance between tension and grace.

Seated on the horse’s back, a slender human figure extends this vertical movement. Her elongated body, stylized to the extreme, recalls certain figures of modern art where the simplification of form reveals the essential. Her neck rises toward a deep red ceramic head, smooth and luminous, contrasting with the organic texture of the patinated bronze. This combination of materials, bronze and ceramic, creates a striking visual vibration: the warm depth of the metal converses with the vivid brilliance of glazed clay.

The horse itself seems to advance silently, in a calm and timeless stride. Its intentionally elongated proportions evoke an inner world — that of imagination and poetry. The animal becomes a symbol of travel, freedom, and contemplation. The rider does not guide the horse; she accompanies it, almost meditatively, as if both beings shared the same breath.

The bronze surface bears the traces of the artist’s hand. The subtle irregularities of the material capture the light, revealing a rich patina oscillating between aged gold and deep browns. This texture gives the sculpture a tactile, living quality, recalling the slow transformation of metal under the sculptor’s hands.

In Cheval 1, Robert de Sutter also explores the notion of fragility. Despite the solidity of bronze, the sculpture conveys a feeling of near-impossible suspension. The slender limbs, the upright posture, and the delicate relationship between rider and horse create a remarkable sculptural balance. This tension between stability and lightness is one of the most sensitive signatures of the artist’s work.

This unique piece fully belongs to the field of contemporary figurative sculpture, while retaining a universal dimension. The horse, a timeless figure in the history of art, becomes here a vehicle for emotion and modern poetry. The work evokes both ancient myths and the artist’s personal reveries.

For collectors and art lovers, Cheval 1 represents far more than a decorative sculpture. It is a work that tells a silent story, transforming the space in which it is displayed and inviting the viewer to slow down. Its elongated presence naturally attracts light and creates a contemplative atmosphere around it.

In today’s context of buying sculptures online, this unique artwork possesses all the qualities of a collectible piece: singularity, strong artistic identity, and exceptional material craftsmanship. Every detail reflects authentic sculptural expertise and a refined aesthetic exploration.

Acquiring Cheval 1 means welcoming into your space a contemporary artwork capable of engaging with architecture, light, and imagination. A sculpture that does not merely occupy space, but inhabits it with poetry
