Claude Bertrand, born in 1949, initially trained as a landscape gardener but the reality of the job did not correspond to his poetic soul. Encounters, transmission and the human aspect take an important place in his daily life. In parallel to his professional life, he works with wood and learns about sculpture through training courses, then he discovers black marble, a revelation, an unexpected encounter. This noble and demanding material requires great expertise and Claude Bertrand is passionate about this meticulous work, his sculpture evolves, his style becomes more precise and opens the doors of the greatest galleries. Claude continues to teach, but this time sculpture, unable to bring himself to move away from what nourishes his being: the human being.
The encounter with a new material, schist, and more particularly old vine posts, rekindled his curiosity. He decided to give new life to a stone anchored in the earth, the vine, marked by years of exploitation, and to revive all its beauty. The schist used by Claude Bertrand is laminated with iron, which gives it a warm and lively oxidation in its raw appearance. The artist's hands are guided by the natural composition of the stone, respecting what nature offers him. He plays with the roughness, the nuances and draws slender, feminine silhouettes, as an integral part of the universe. Each work is a tribute to nature, to life.
Today Claude Bertrand divides his time between the search for blocks of schist, sculpture and teaching, activities that are absolutely inseparable and very similar, teaching is to find "the stone" that is in everyone and allow it to reveal what is beautiful about it, an analogy, a syllogism, a revelation that makes his daily life a hymn to life.

The gallery's words

A human encounter of extreme generosity, just like the artist's work. The works and the artist are rooted in life, the earth and nature. Claude is sincere and attentive, respecting both the material and the character that comes to life in his hands. He magnifies the rock, inviting it to reveal its deepest secrets.
