Procession – The Poetic and Chaotic Drift of Humanity

In Procession, Nicolas Monjo creates a vibrant, multifaceted tableau — both satirical and deeply human. Painted in acrylic and oil on canvas (100 x 100 cm), this work stages a humanity embarked on the same vessel, oscillating between absurdity and tenderness, humor and gravity.

At the center of the composition, a large paper boat drifts upon a churning turquoise sea. Crammed inside this fragile craft, men, women, and children seem to be moving together toward an uncertain horizon. The boat becomes the symbol of a collective journey, of a humanity that, despite turmoil, remains bound together in its passage.

Monjo’s characters, recognizable by their expressive and slightly stylized faces, form a theater of contrasting emotions. The veiled woman in turquoise — central and enigmatic — sticks out her tongue with defiant humor. She embodies both mockery and lucidity: a kind of profane Madonna, laughing at certainties and illusions. Around her, a serene red-haired woman, a musician holding a ukulele, and several anxious or contemplative faces create a mosaic of human souls — a reflection of our contemporary world.

Below, the sea comes alive: a dog rows in a tiny boat, another figure clings to a yellow duck float, and a small blue creature watches through 3D glasses. These whimsical yet poetic details balance the composition between dreamlike fantasy and social commentary. Everything in the scene feels animated by an inner pulse — a perpetual motion that mirrors the restless vitality of our times.

Monjo’s color palette, dominated by the contrast between blue and yellow, conveys this tension between hope and confusion. The saturated yellow evokes human warmth, but also the glare and excess of the modern world. The blue, representing water and introspection, acts as an emotional counterpoint, bringing depth and stillness to the scene.

Beneath its apparent playfulness, Procession unfolds a meditation on the human condition — on drift, solidarity, and the search for meaning within chaos. Nicolas Monjo delivers a bittersweet satire, where tenderness and lucidity coexist harmoniously. His brushwork — precise yet generous — captures the complexity of the world without judgment, transforming chaos into poetry.

For collectors of contemporary figurative art, Procession stands as a remarkable piece: both narrative and symbolic, humorous yet profound. It encapsulates the essence of Nicolas Monjo’s art — his ability to transform the collective into the intimate, and the absurd into beauty.
