Roland Art has become an artist like his mother, to whom he has great admiration. Since his childhood he has been sitting next to her with his paper and paint and trying to imitate her gestures so often observed. Roland has always been involved with animals. As a child he liked to visit the neighbours and watch the herd of dairy cows with their many old cats and kittens. Back home he would go to the animal shelter where injured birds, especially waterfowl, were taken in until the day they recovered. That was the best part, Roland would help free them to return to their natural environment, he imagined himself rising like them and gaining his freedom to join his imaginary world. Every night he contemplates this world in his room, imagining animals, drawn on the frieze on the wall, joining an enchanted and colourful world.
As a nature lover, it was only natural that Roland embraced the career of a professional windsurfer and learned from the ocean for 10 years. He made his own surfboards on which he won competitions.
Roland never gave up drawing or painting and in 1995 he started working with wood, which he discovered his attraction for in Denmark. He then created wooden cats with the famous bird on the tail. Cats are his favourite animals, but also cows, birds, flowers and hearts, which he interprets relentlessly until he brings his imagination to life. Each piece is unique and made with a lot of "love" and technique, Roland is passionate, he lives in this cheerful and childlike universe, he has fun with his creations, he takes up challenges every day and his works enrich a world filled with happiness, the bird has freed itself!
"The titles are born during the making of a panel or a sculpture, with their own language of words. I crawl deep into my heart to find words that don't exist yet. My style is pop art and is imaginative, dreamy and expressively painted until I am happy, that's all I can do."
The gallery's words
If I were asked why I selected Roland Art's work, I would say simply because it made me smile. Sometimes an artwork gives you a glimpse of childhood and carefreeness. Pink animals, green sky and yellow sea and everything is normal. Roland Art's works have this ability to make you drift towards an imaginary world where everything is possible, or better still, where everything is real.
