Bernard Monteilh realizes a large part of his career in finance and keeps sculpture as a hobby. In 2008 he made up his mind and went to learn from Jean Paul MESTRES who will forever remain a reference for him. Bernard would continue to frequent Jean Paul's studio for ten years or so, and inevitably would draw inspiration from his travels to represent the animal world. In 2018, the artist ended up pulling his nose out of his studio to take an interest in firing clay and rediscovering its magic. The loxodonta, a proboscidean mammal better known as the African elephant, has become his animal of choice. It will eventually find its way to the oven and fragility will give way to robustness. Once fired, all the sculptures very carefully hidden in the studio will begin to join the works presented by the art galleries.

Bernard Monteilh transforms a block of sandstone into an animal. He likes to use pruning, a destructive technique that consists of removing material from a block of earth to form a volume, then construction by addition, a constructive technique that follows the evolution of observation and thought. and which consists in placing and raising the volume by juxtaposition and addition of pieces of earth and thus obtain a volume around which the gaze can turn.

The words of the gallery

What I liked about Bernard Monteilh's artwork were the poetry and the tenderness that emanate from his animals. A tilted head posture that invites us to listen to the suggested story, round shapes that encourage the touch, a minimalist patina that makes sure we do not move away from the animal.
